Denture Maintenance Guide
If you have dentures, either partial or full, then you realize there are many aspects to both the care of your dentures, and your mouth. There are the physical requirements, as well as the lifestyle requirements. Neither is overly complicated, which is why dentures have been and remain a cost effective solution – compared to implants or going without teeth. Today, 1 in 15 Canadian adults under 80 is using complete dentures. The Canadian Dental Association recommends seeing your dentist at least once a year if you have partial or complete dentures.
At Jasper Place Denture Clinic in Edmonton, we specialize in friendly, caring denture services carried out by a team of professionals, including our mobile denture services where we bring our services right to your door. Working with dentures is an art, a science, and a craft; it takes an understanding of how teeth look in various lighting situations and what types of base materials and relines offer the most comfort to the wearer.
To maintain that comfort, here’s a few tips for maintaining your full or partial dentures:
- Before cleaning – to avoid accidentally dropping them, be sure to fill the sink with water or lay a soft towel down. Dentures and partials may break if they fall and hit a hard surface.
- After meals – rinse denture/partial under warm water after each meal to remove loose food debris. Boiling or excessively hot water can cause the denture to warp and not fit properly.
- Cleaning:
- Brush daily with soft bristles that is specifically designed for cleaning dentures.
- Clean with a denture cleaner, and avoid using household cleansers and bleach, which may whiten the pink portion of the denture.
- Cleaning tablets can be used while denture is soaking in water to remove light stains and loosen plaque buildup, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Ultrasonic cleaners can be used to care for dentures, the sound waves create a wave motion that dislodges the undesirable deposits
Options 2, 3 and 4 do not replace a thorough daily brushing.
- After cleaning/soaking – rinse thoroughly under warm water before re-inserting into mouth. Mouthwash may be used after rinsing with water to give a fresh taste and feeling.
- When not worn – dentures should be placed in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in water. Dentures need to be kept moist when not being worn so they do not dry out or lose their shape. Your dentist can recommend the best methods for caring for your particular denture.
When it comes to lifestyle changes: it is important to brush your gums, tongue, and palate with a soft-bristled brush every morning to remove plaque and stimulates circulation in the mouth; remove dentures at night to avoid irritation, discomfort, and infection of the soft tissue beneath your denture; never attempt to adjust or repair dentures yourself, doing so can weaken the metal structure; and, be sure to contact your oral health care provider if a denture breaks, cracks, or chips or if one of the teeth becomes loose.
